Prompt Engineering Is GPS for Your AI — But Context Is the Map
If you’ve spent any real time working with large language models, you’ve probably run into a version of this frustration: the model’s answer is technically fine but completely misses the point. It’s grammatically correct, factually defensible, and utterly useless for what you actually needed.
The GPS analogy for prompt engineering captures something important here. Your prompt is the destination you punch in. The model is the navigation engine. Prompt engineering, the craft of phrasing, structuring, and iterating, is the route optimization. You’re not just telling the system where to go. You’re shaping how it gets there.
But the analogy lacks a crucial layer: context.

What GPS Actually Does
Think about why Google Maps and Waze became so much better than the early GPS units of the 2000s. It wasn’t just better routing algorithms. It was context. Real-time traffic. Road closures. Your preferred mode (driving, transit, walking). Time of day. Whether you want the fastest route, the scenic one, or the one that avoids highways. It learns your history.
A GPS without context is just a street atlas with a voice. It can technically get you there, but it can’t do so well.
Prompts work the same way. A prompt without context is a destination without any of the inputs that make the route actually useful. “Write a product update email” will get you something. But “Write a product update email to enterprise security buyers, 150 words, focused on a new DLP feature, warm but not salesy, assuming the reader skimmed the last email and didn’t click through”, that’s a destination with a map.
What Context Actually Looks Like
When I’m working through an AI prompt for real work, such as a cover letter, a product doc, or a market analysis, I’ve started to think about context as five layers:
Who is asking, and why. “I’m a senior product leader targeting security roles” versus “I’m a hiring manager reviewing candidates” completely changes the shape of a good answer. The model can’t infer this from the task alone.
Who the output is for. A technical buyer reads differently from an executive sponsor. A teammate reads differently than a stranger. If you don’t tell the model who’s on the receiving end, it defaults to a generic, middle-of-the-road register that lands with no one.
What’s already been tried or known. “I’ve already written a generic version. Make it sharper” is a radically different ask than “start from scratch.” Models assume you want something net new unless you say otherwise, and they waste tokens (and your time) covering ground you’ve already covered.
Constraints and non-negotiables. Length, tone, things to avoid, structural requirements, and brand voice. Without these, the model takes its best guess, which tends to be verbose, hedged, and formatted for a general audience.
What success looks like. This is the one most people skip. “I want a response that would make a recruiter stop scrolling” is more useful than “write a good LinkedIn post.” Give the model a picture of the finish line, not just the direction.

Why This Matters More as Models Get Better
Here’s the counterintuitive thing: as models get more capable, context matters more, not less. Early prompt engineering was about compensating for model limitations — tricks, formats, chain-of-thought hacks. A lot of that is now baked into the model by default.
What you can’t automate away is knowing what you actually want. The model can reason well. It can write well. It can structure well. But it can’t read your mind about who’s in the meeting tomorrow, why this email is sensitive, or which of three conflicting priorities actually matters this week. That’s context, and context is yours to provide.
This is why the best prompts I write don’t feel like “engineering” at all. They feel like briefing a new hire who’s sharp but has no history with your company, your audience, or your taste. You wouldn’t hand that person a one-line task and expect magic. You’d spend two minutes setting them up.
The Practical Takeaway
If your AI outputs feel generic, the first instinct shouldn’t be to switch models or hunt for a clever prompt template. It should be: what does the model not know that I know? Nine times out of ten, the missing ingredient is the context you have in your head but didn’t write down.
The GPS metaphor is useful, but I’d refine it this way: the destination is your goal, the prompt is the address, the model is the engine, and context is every other variable that turns a correct route into the right one. You can technically get there without it. You just won’t like where you end up, or how long it took.
Good prompt engineering, at its core, is really good context engineering. The sooner you treat it that way, the better your outputs get — and the less time you spend rerouting.
